Considering moving back to Seattle

topic posted Fri, February 8, 2008 - 1:47 PM by  Sierra
Hello,

I lived in the Seattle area for roughly seven years and than spent anther year and a half in Tacoma before the tech recession. I've always considered Seattle my 2nd home. To make a long story short I hate Los Angeles and I'm sadly learning that I can't live in Austin, TX due to health problems (worse here). I don't want to go back to LA but... So out of curiosity I posted my resume in Seattle and have a tentative opportunity - no offer yet but the HRM seems to be interested.

So I'm now researching Seattle and seeing if I want to move back. Just want to get a feel for the environment of people. I'm super happy-go-lucky type and horrible at politics (government, office & social clicks).

Just looking for people's 2 cents

I've heard that Seattle has gone conservative. I can deal with that if it means I get a push up the career ladder. I guess what worries me is two things.

      1) Los Angeles people are really callous and unfriendly. While being in Austin has shown me that I can bring my cheery attitude anywheres I would prefer an area that isn't as callous as LA.

      2) Health - I've been thinking back over my time in Seattle and I honestly don't believe my health was as bad in Seattle as it
was/is in LA. (I'm currently in Austin). Austin -- it's worse so I can't live here w/o insurance and that is looking like a big no go.

LA has few good jobs (but great events)
Austin has great jobs if you have a min. of 3 years experience
Seattle: I do miss it but has it changed again? I was there in the early 90s when people who never knew smiled and said hello just because.

    I guess my questions are

Whats the Burner community like in Seattle?

Are there a lot of social gatherings / events?

Is there a sense of community? Or is it more like High School?

Do people really feel at home at a gathering / event?

Whats the Burner community like in Seattle?
BIG... I float from group to group allot and you can always meet someone new. There are more groups of burners that I still have yet to hang with damn it!

Are there a lot of social gatherings / events?
To be honest almost to many. I find I very rarely make it out of the burner/art scene to see what the other people of Seattle are doing. Which is actually kind of disappointing to me personally, but what can I say, I have more fun with this crowd.

Is there a sense of community? Or is it more like High School?
I struggle with this one personally, I think because there are so many groups of burners here in Seattle, there is a sense of community among each group, it is rare though that I see the groups come together as a whole community. Honestly half the burners I know in Seattle do not even pay attention to the Yahoo group, the other half, well they talk allot on there ;) Then I went to (had a body art booth at) sea compression and I realized that the community is just so large that it is rare to have space for us all :)

Do people really feel at home at a gathering / event?
I am pretty socially anxious to be dead honest and I feel more at home at burner events and gatherings than anywhere else. Because I am dead blunt about stuff, I would say the seattle crews can be a little more stand off than say the crews in portland, but that is just my personal experience. I often wonder if since I spent the first years of my life in oregon if I just resonate easier down there (yes I am a fuckin hippy).

So there you have it, at least from my little ol perspective. All in all The community is active and alive here in seattle. Many Many amazing people, and more than enough art to make you head go pop.

    Hi Sierra,
I just happened to check Tribe today. First time in a long time. I was drawn to your posting. I read some of your profile and went to your website. I am very impressed with you and the way you think. I just found out a couple of days ago that my housemate has decided to move in with his gf. So I've got this wonderful room for rent in my home. It has a private bath and private outside entrance. If you are interested and are moving back to Seattle let me know. I can give you more info about myself and by home at that time.
Sweetie, good luck in what ever you decide. From your writing you will be successful and happy whereever you land.

      OMG
      LOL

I just read the two last postings back to back... and damn if you two alone are not making me want to pack up today and hop into my car. Well... I did say I was going to leave it in Fate's hands and she is ether (excuse my language if it offends you) fucking with me or trying to say GO HOME!

I spent the last weekend almost physically bashing my head against a wall because I just couldn't decide what to do or what was best for me. Than this morning I received a letter from an up and coming business in the Seattle are in an industry I love (hobbies) potentially doing something I love (Marketing).

BUT -- because you know there has to be one.

I talked with my counselor and he helped me write a letter to convince my employer to let me continue working virtual.
My ex is a scum bucket and I actually missed him until I read something this morning.

Than a light bulb turned on and than anther and through the dark I see more light bulbs... I just wish I knew what freaking state they were in! :P

I love Seattle -- gawd help my weird little soul but I love Seattle and the rain and I still haven't had good calamari or baked salmon since I left -- you people ruined me! :P

          Didn't hear a thing.

Anyhoo, the more the merrier. Which reminds me, nobody's brought up the subject of cross-pollination yet - which is probably 'cause it sounds dirty. What I'm referring to though is the close-closer-hey-that-tickles-ya-know relationship we have with our neighbors in Puddletown and Vangroovy (aka Portland, OR and Vancouver, B.C.).

We go to each others events, parties, fund raisers, dog-washings, etc. In this fashion we can keep an eye on each other and it fills out the calendar like you wouldn't believe.

Plus, the Canadians are like UBER-hot, so there's that.
